We are building a directory of unique and relevant animal-oriented digital projects (outside of our archive) to help people discover other exceptional projects that advance understanding and engagement with animals in society and the natural world. Together, they illustrate diverse cultural perspectives and approaches, as well as the connections that bring us together.

Note: The category titles emphasize a particular focus, however most of the projects listed are multi- or interdisciplinary. Check back as we continue adding new projects.

Animal Rights and Welfare Collections, North Carolina State University Libraries. https://www.lib.ncsu.edu/scrc/collecting-areas/animal-rights-welfare The collections “document the social, cultural, legislative, political, and intellectual history of animal welfare and animal rights.” They also have The Animal Turn, a project that is digitizing some 239,000 pages of archival materials from their collection.

Earth Species Project. https://www.earthspecies.org/ “Our work to decode communication of other species builds on…advances…in AI being applied to human language, which we are extending to the non-human world. It also builds off many decades of bioacoustics and behavioral ecology research which has already uncovered complex communication systems in other species.”
